Cardiff University’s School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies relocated to a state-of-the-art building in Cardiff’s Central Square Development, situated next door to the new BBC Cymru Wales. The relocation supports the School in building stronger industry links and boosts student employability through direct access to major media organizations. IBI Group provided architecture and interior design services for the School’s new innovative, collaborative and professional learning space.
With 89 per cent of the School’s research being classed as world-leading or internationally excellent, the new facility incorporates a number of technically-advanced design features that not only enable students to excel in their chosen subject, but further raise the profile of the School as a world-leading centre of journalism.
As interior design lead for the new School, the IBI team incorporated a 300-seat lecture theatre, six newsrooms, dedicated editing suites, TV and radio studios, a postgraduate research space, a library, and innovation and stakeholder engagement labs. These new, state-of-the-art facilities, combined with direct access to major media organizations within the journalism industry offer students invaluable employment skills.
The School and BBC Wales have a strong working relationship, thanks to a long-standing program of professional training journalism internships. The cutting-edge facilities will be a shared resource, enabling a continued exchange of knowledge and experience.
